Summary

My study abroad trip to South Korea was one of the highlights of my year, and I am eternally grateful for the experience. Throughout the in-class portion of the Fashion Business in South Korea course, I came to understand the basics of Korean culture and language, and delved deep into the inner workings of the Korean fashion industry. One of the most memorable aspects of the in-class portion of the course was our Style on Screen projects, where we consumed Korean media of our choice and dissected the clothing/fashion choices that were used to further a story or narrative.

At the end of the semester our class finally traveled to South Korea where we completed the in-country portion of the course. We spent the majority of our time in Seoul, but also ventured out to cities like Busan and Daegu. While in South Korea we visited a handful of companies, including Aland (a carefully curated multi-brand store), Hansoll Textile (an apparel manufacturing company), and Lillycover (a beauty-tech startup). Our company visits were incredibly insightful, and having the opportunity to learn firsthand from industry professionals in the Korean market provided for an invaluable experience. While in South Korea, we also were able to visit landmarks such as the DMZ and Gyeongbukgong Palace and eat at several different traditional Korean restaurants to get a feel for the cultural cuisine.
